Q. Is Memorial Day a good time to buy a mattress?
A. In the mattress game, there are 5 main holidays - President's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend. These are the times to shop if you want to score the biggest discount.
In celebration of Amerisleep's big Memorial Day sale, I'm sharing a new Amerisleep post this Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Hybrid Mattress
We purchased and reviewed our first Amerisleep mattress, an AS3, in 2012. Since then, I've received hundreds of email inquiries from blog readers wanting help with their mattress buying decision.
This week, I received my first-ever question about a hybrid mattress.
This week, I received my first-ever question about a hybrid mattress.
Here is our email conversation, including hybrid mattress advice straight from Amerisleep. I've removed the reader's name for privacy.
Kitty,
My wife and I are looking for a new bed. We are highly considering the AS3 as she likes a softer bed and I like one a little firmer. I am heavier, 290, she is much lighter, 165. I am telling you that because we are wondering if we should purchase the AS3 or the AS3 hybrid.
Do you have any knowledge about the AS3 hybrid? Our current bed, a sleep number, is almost 13 years old and not the most comfortable anymore. Hence why we are looking for a new bed.
I like your site and the Amerisleep reviews….they are helpful.
Thanks,
M

Hi, M. Thank you so much for your kind words. Sometimes I wonder if anyone actually reads my reviews, so that was really nice to see.
I'm sorry that I don't have any information to provide on the AS3 hybrid, as I have never tried that one, but I can recommend the AS3. You and your wife sound similar to my husband and myself, with him preferring a more firm mattress and me wanting something softer (but not as soft as the AS4 - that one is really, really soft!).
I have a contact at Amerisleep who usually gets back to me within a day or two. I'll send him an email to ask the difference between the AS3 and the AS3 hybrid, as well as which he would recommend for your situation.
It would probably be helpful for him to know your sleeping styles, if you don't mind me asking. For example, my husband usually sleeps on his back and I tend to flip around into just about every position throughout the night, chronic insomniac that I am.

(My response from Amerisleep)
I would definitely recommend the hybrid for couples. AS2 or AS3 hybrid if they want more of a firm bed and AS5 hybrid if they want more soft.
Back and stomach sleepers usually opt for the AS2 or AS3 while side sleepers the AS4.
The difference between a foam and hybrid mattress is the coils (or springs). Foam models, like your Amerisleep AS3, do not have any coils so they don’t have that extra bounce that a hybrid mattress would.
Please also let the customer know we have live chat agents on our site during the daytime who are happy to assist even further 😊

Thank you.
We bought the AS3 this afternoon and look forward to our new bed.
I have to admit that I am going to be checking out your site. I like it and I have to try some instapot recipes.
Thanks,

Great! Please let me know what you and your wife think of the mattress when it arrives. I think you are going to love it! :)
Our Amerisleep AS3 is more than 8 years old but is still like-new. If it ever actually needs to be replaced, I'm open to purchasing an AS3 hybrid mattress. That said, I can't help thinking of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
After my conversation with M and with my Amerisleep representative, I wondered how hybrid mattresses are shipped. After all, you couldn't have a bed-in-a-box that contains springs, like a traditional mattress, right? You'd never have seen our Simmons Beautyrest crammed into a little box and delivered to our door by UPS.
(I can easily imagine it crammed into a little trash can though. Sorry, 8 years later and I'm still upset with Simmons for ripping us off.)
Once again, I decided to go straight to the source for an answer to my hybrid mattress question.

Hello, how can I help you sleep better?

Hi, Julian. I have a weird question. Do your hybrid mattresses ship in a little box, just like the non-hybrids? With the springs, it doesn't seem like they would fit. Thanks!

Hi!
Great question. Yes, our Hybrids do ship in a box just like our foam mattresses.
You 01:05:59 pm
I am surprised to hear that. Are the springs just super compressed to begin with? It doesn't damage them?
Julian 01:08:28 pm
There is no damage, as our coils have a slight barrel shape that allows full compression with no damage. Also, being individually wrapped, they do not tie up together, as there is no metal to metal contact.
You 01:09:19 pm
That is interesting. Thank you for your help! :)

And with our beds being built to order, they are not compressed for a long period at all.
